How are These Made?

I get that question a lot.

Short Answer
I work primarily from my original photographs. The exceptions to this are when I use old family photos or computer-generated models. Sometimes I have friends photograph me. Rarely will I use found images, if these are needed I trace and recreate them. Sometimes I can draw something from scratch and use that.

I work primarily with 35mm film images, although I sometimes use a digital camera. I scan the film and work from digital files. Using an image editing application, I isolate the element(s) I want from each original photo. I build a new composition from these elements.

A finished montage can end up having less than 20 to more than 100 separate photo elements.

Long Answer

Please check back later for a more detailed explanantion and screenshots of a montage as it was being built.
